A longstanding memorial and headstone business labeled as the “oldest” in its area has been forbidden from local cemeteries after operating for 138 years. Mackie Memorials, based in Wirral, has been banned from Wirral’s cemeteries and is currently facing inquiries from Wirral Council and Merseyside Police. The company, previously known as E. F. Mackie Limited and situated on Rake Lane in Wallasey, was taken over by Thomas Smith in 2023, who then set up a shop on Liscard Way. Mackie Memorials claims to have supplied around 100,000 headstones since its establishment in 1887, working on notable projects such as the Beatles statues, the Anglican Cathedral, and Everton Football Club’s Goodison Park.
Following complaints received by Wirral Council’s cemetery service, the council is urging individuals to report any issues with the company to the police. The company has been barred from operating in council cemeteries, and Merseyside Police is cooperating with the local authority. Wirral Council officials have acknowledged challenges reported by individuals dealing with Mackie Memorials and are encouraging them to report their experiences to the police.
Residents are advised to file complaints through Report Fraud, the UK’s national service for reporting cybercrime and fraud, alongside Merseyside Police. Wirral Council has suspended Mackie Memorials from operating in council cemeteries due to ongoing concerns and is considering further actions against the company. Companies House records show that Mackie Memorials Limited’s accounts and confirmation statement are overdue, with an application made to strike off the company. However, the compulsory strike-off action has been halted by Companies House.
Upon taking over the business, Mr. Smith expressed his commitment to upholding the company’s long-standing reputation and importance in the community. He emphasized the significance of their role in the grieving process and the responsibility it entails.
