A young backpacker discovered deceased in the presence of a group of dingoes on K’gari Island in Queensland, Australia, has had the cause of her death disclosed. Piper James, a 19-year-old from Canada, was tragically found dead on January 19. Before commencing her global backpacking journey, she defiantly informed her father in Canada, “I’m 18, and you can’t stop me!”
Piper’s lifeless body was found surrounded by wild dingoes on a beach near her campsite, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of her demise. Subsequently, eight out of the ten dingoes near her were euthanized. An inquest has determined that Piper’s official cause of death was drowning following a dingo attack. The Coroners Court of Queensland spokesperson stated that Ms. James perished due to drowning amid multiple injuries resulting from a dingo attack.
Piper’s father, Todd James, expressed his grief, reminiscing about her infectious laughter and kind nature. He cherished her determination to pursue her aspirations. Angela James, Piper’s mother, shared that her daughter was thoroughly enjoying her adventurous trip, indulging in activities like motocross, camping, swimming, and surfing.
The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science, and Innovation (DETSI) in the state emphasizes the importance of being dingo-safe on K’gari for personal safety. Dingoes, as apex predators, are pack hunters and must be respected with caution, as they do not respond to human commands and should not be mistaken for domestic pets.
