Manchester United player Harry Maguire’s conviction for assault and bribery in Greece has been confirmed, six years after his initial arrest. The 32-year-old defender has received a 15-month suspended sentence from the Greek Courts after being found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery during an incident on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.
Despite maintaining his innocence, Maguire intends to appeal the verdict. He was not present in court and is expected to feature in Manchester United’s lineup against Newcastle in their upcoming match.
The court reduced Maguire’s original 21-month sentence to 15 months and 20 days, along with imposing a €1,500 (£1,304) fine on him. Maguire’s brother, Joe, was acquitted of attempted bribery but was found guilty of aggravated assault and verbal abuse towards the police.
The altercation unfolded as Maguire was out with his wife, sister Daisy, brother Joe, and a group of others waiting for a taxi. Following an encounter with two Albanian men, Maguire claimed that his sister was injected with an unknown substance, leading to her losing consciousness. He alleged that his attempts to seek medical help resulted in his arrest, physical assault by the police, and accusations of bribery.
The court’s decision may impact Maguire’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, as he will need to disclose his conviction to obtain a visa for the tournament in North America.
