“£12.4m EuroMillions Win Leads to Decade-Long Legal Battle”

A pair of individuals struck it rich with a £12.4 million EuroMillions win, but their happiness was short-lived. Luís Ribeiro and Cristina Simões used to gather their funds at a local cafe weekly to purchase lottery tickets in the hopes of hitting the jackpot.

Their routine changed on January 19, 2007, when their lucky numbers were drawn, landing them a massive €15 million (£12.4m) prize. Despite their high hopes for a better life, the outcome was not what Luis and Cristina had anticipated. Their experience serves as a cautionary tale for a recent £181m winner in the Tuesday draw.

The substantial sum was deemed “life-changing” by senior winner’s advisor Andy Carter from Allywn, likening the winner’s potential lifestyle to that of Adele. The fortunate winner aimed to avoid the same fate as Luis and Cristina, who had to travel from Barcelos to Lisbon to claim their prize from Portugal’s national lottery authority.

Although the money was deposited into various accounts at a regional bank, Caixa de Crédito Agrícola, it wasn’t solely in Luis and Cristina’s names but also in Cristina’s parents’ names. Initially, the couple believed their newfound wealth would solidify their relationship, leading to talks of financial security, travel, investments, and marriage.

However, tensions arose when Luis sought to access his share of the money to support his family, only to be blocked by Cristina’s parents, who insisted on waiting until marriage for major financial decisions. This dispute escalated in 2008 when Luis filed an injunction to freeze the accounts linked to the winnings.

The ensuing legal battle lasted over a decade as the couple fought over the ownership of the money. Luis contended that they had bought the winning ticket together under an unspoken agreement to split the winnings equally, while Cristina claimed she had bought the ticket alone, asserting her legal right to the money.

After multiple court rulings, including appeals to higher courts, it was finally determined that the money should be divided equally between the two. By this time, Luis and Cristina’s relationship had deteriorated irreparably, with Luis feeling emotionally drained despite emerging victorious in the legal conflict.
